JAKARTA, Aug. 15 Indonesian health officials say avian influenza has been confirmed in a 29-year-old woman who died last weekend.

The woman, identified only as S.W., was from a village in Negara district in Bali, The Jakarta Post reported. She was the first woman to die of avian influenza in Bali since the disease was first identified among poultry on the island in 2003.

At least 103 cases of the disease have been confirmed in humans in Indonesia, with 82 of the victims dying.

S.W. lived about 300 yards from chickens diagnosed with the H5N1 strain. A 5-year-old daughter died Aug. 3 after showing some symptoms of the disease.

She was taken to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar, Bali, Saturday and died the next day. A 2-year-old who lived nearby is now being treated in the hospital.
