Opera has introduced a new browser for the Nintendo DS. The browser, which was launched on October 6 for European users, is available in two versions, one each for the classic DS and the Lite model.

Nintendo said the DS browser afforded the users a unique experience by allowing them to surf the web as well as use the immaculate screen for touch capabilities. European customers can use the browser from any Wi-Fi hotspots, at home or utilize the free Wi-Fi Connection Hotspots by Nintendo besides the public access Hotspots.

The DS browser can perform in two modes. The first fit-to-width mode allows users to access the web by displaying all the content on a page in a single column. If users disable images, they can surf even faster, Nintendo said.

The second mode available is the DS mode, through which users get an overview of the Web page, navigated by thumbnails. If the thumbnail is held over a particular area, that area is magnified.

"Opera's browser for Nintendo DS is about convenience. By putting the Web on this small, portable, gaming device, we are giving users the convenience of the Web wherever they go," said Scott Hedrick, executive vice president, Opera Software.

Laurent Fischer the marketing director, Nintendo Europe, said that ever since Nintendo launched the free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Service in November 2005, over 2 million people have used it to link up, " The next logical step for us was to enable people to browse the Internet from their Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite."

The Nintendo DS browser is available for Euro 39.99.
