CHICAGO, Aug. 9 Two middle school students are suing the Chicago Board of Education because their teacher denied them a bathroom break.
Cousins Seneca Ammons and Keefe Ammons Jr. were suspended from school for using the bathroom without permission after their teacher denied the whole class a bathroom break as punishment, The Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday.
The children are suing the board of education in federal court on behalf everyone in the class, alleging they were wrongfully denied bathroom access and could only drink water at lunch, the Ammons' attorney, Blake Horowitz said.
City officials said they overturned the suspensions and are investigating staff at Cuffe Math and Science Academy, but would not comment on the lawsuit.
A school board spokesman said the school's principal, John Jones, has insisted all students get access to the bathroom when they need it. Copyright 2007 by UPI

Same thing happened to me when I was a kid. An old, crotchetty, nasty teacher with no life refused us bathroom breaks.
You know what I did? I took a crap in my pants and my parents took her wrinkled ass to court.

Hotoro: You are going to be a teacher? Really? You can't put together a proper sentence but you plan on becoming a teacher. You'll fit right in.

My daughter's elementary has a reward program and some of the teacher's issue fake money as a reward. When a student needs to use the restroom the teacher makes the kids pay to for the privilege. The "reasoning" is that they need to show responsibility and use the restroom during recess. You know, when they are finally allowed to go outside for 20 minutes to play. All of the 8 year olds give up the fresh air and the playground to use the bathroom. If the principal at Cuffe Math and Science Academy is like our principal then you can be assured that he will lie to protect his, guaranteed to never get fired, union teacher. Welcome to the world of government sponsored education.

It is common policy for US schools that students are allowed to "walk out" to take a bathroom break whenever necessary, provided they have requested one from the teacher and been denied. In my school I only seen this used in two seperate occasions and there too the teachers sought punishment of the students afterwards. As an EDU major who is considering teaching in the Chicago area I got to say that I am glad that these students and their families are standing up for the student's rights. Too many policies are put in place to make schools look good then never applied/ only applied when the staff feels like it. I hope that the teacher(s)/staff who blatantly abused policy in this manner get what is coming to them.

These kids should be able to do whatever they want, whenever they want, just like in real life. When someone in authority tells me I can't do something, I go straight to the Supreme Court. This is AMERICA!

After Columbine, my high school decided to require that everyone present their student ID cards to the "bathroom monitor", essentially a tired, miserable old woman who felt that her purpose in life was to make others as miserable as her.
I, like many of my schoolmates, never really kept my ID, and not wanting to have to pay to get a new one, did without for the most part. Therein lies the problem, because this old bag would even refuse those who were about to become 'unwell'...
Proof yet again that just because one has a degree and a "position of responsibility" does not make them perfect...

They tried to do that in my high school- you weren't allowed to drink water during class. Conveniently they didn't let the parents know about the policy because they obviously knew it was wrong to keep cross country runners like myself dehydrated.
Whenever a teacher was in a bad mood they became an evil tyrant seeking to punish children in any way they could, and the "no bathroom" policy happened frequently.
