Green Bay State representative, Frank Lasee proposes to bring in a legislation that would allow teachers and School personnel to carry weapons into Schools. He said that the decision would be left to the teachers but if they do decide to carry weapons, then they would have to undergo strict training on usage of weapons.

The proposal has been prompted by recent shootings in Schools in Colorado, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. In one of the incidents, Principal John Klang of Weston High School was shot and killed.

According to Lasee, the proposal stems from his study of such existing legislation in Israel and Thailand. He said that this would ensure that School personnel and teachers are better equipped to face situations which could otherwise be life threatening.

But the proposal of Lasee has been met with responses varying from cold to stringent opposition from the various school staff and also law enforcers.

Pete Pochouski, Director of School safety, Milwaukee Public School said there is lot of freedom in the United States as compared to Israel and Thailand and therefore they should be prepared to expose themselves to dangers to keep the freedom. He further stated that statistically, schools are the safest place for children and the current problem is not to the extent of allowing school personnel to carry arms into schools.

Lena Crawford, acting Assistant Principal of Marshall High School says it would be better to use the official resources to introduce more safeguards and safety measures in schools to make it safer.

Middleton Cross Plains Superintendent William Reis said the proposal of Lasee is not at all reasonable and would only amount to asking for more trouble.

Carie Jens who teaches at Webster's Elementary School in Green Bay said it is an absurd idea and went on to add that she does not want to have the responsibility of carrying guns as it will scare children. She also expressed concerns of possible misplacement or forceful snatching of these arms. “You know, that type of thing should be saved for police officers and SWAT teams, not for us” she says.

Green Bay Superintendent Dan Nerad said that though steps are needed to make schools safer and secure, the steps taken should not create unsafe situations and added that carrying guns is not the solution to the problem being faced.

Manitowoc Lincoln High School Principal Keith Shaw said that the only armed persons in the school should be Police officials.

Manitowoc public school District Superintendent Mark Swanson said that more efforts should go toward providing for added safety and the student teacher relation should not be disturbed by carrying of arms by teachers.

Lasee said that though his idea may not be politically correct, it has worked in other countries and hence he would have to work around a federal law that bans guns on school grounds.

    Weapons solve problems.
By: Jay Cliche , Wed, 11 Oct 2006 16:31:27 GMT

This is great because it teaches our children that the best way to deal with problems is with a gun. Wonder why our society has become so violent?

Relax everyone. He's just a state legislator making an un-pc suggesstion. This is what "freedom" is all about.

Arm teachers - Lasee Go Home
By: Jack Siler , Fri, 06 Oct 2006 16:04:22 GMT

Some would say this is just a return to the good old American days when everyone wore a six-gun on his hip. But when states like Wisconsin begin to resemble Bavaria 1931, (say nothing of our national level) with crazy-like-a-fox elected officials who have sub-agendas it's time to take some basic questions beyond superficial thinking. There's a new book out with the title TOTALITARIAN DEMOCRACY. Maybe the title says it all, but did we get there? And what did all the good honest citizens of Germany do when their elected fascists began to install and impose seemingly

    Arming school personnel
By: Adam Young , Fri, 06 Oct 2006 14:31:03 GMT

As a Wisconsin resident, nothing surprises me any more when a Republican legislator speaks. Imagine, in the twisted world of the former Party of Lincoln, more guns make us safer and guns don't kill people. In Madison, the lunatic fringe is in charge of the state government. Just think, if someone were to walk in a school with a gun, the police couldn't do a thing in Frank Lasee's world because it would be possibly legal. Unfortunately, Lasee represents a right-wing district, so he'll be re-elected. One other thing to note: Frank Lasee has a distant cousin, state Senator Alan Lasee (R), who serves as President of the State Senate. Alan Lasee says as long as he's Senate President, Frank Lasee's proposal will never reach the floor, so there is some hope! And Alan Lasee is a conservative.

    Completely Insane

If anything the parents should start being held liable for their children's actions. That would be the only way to start making parents pay more attention to what their children are doing. In the amish case this is just a big tragedy, but when kids bring guns to school that is part of the parents fault.

To arm the teachers would be a huge mistake. What happens when the students find out where these teachers are hiding their gun. And whose fault would it be if they found the teachers gun and used it. What is this world comign to.

I also see they past a bill that the teacher personnel can strip search students. As a father, if my daughter was ever strip searched at school by a teacher or faculty, I would be introducing them to my baseball bat.

PARENTS, PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILDREN

    teachers and guns?
    By: syl , Fri, 06 Oct 2006 14:09:04 GMT

why arm the teachers when the could probely shoot the kids the do not like or if the kid is misbehaving.i think teachers should never be armed. i think that we shoud have more securaty gaurds in our schools

    Oh great, more guns.
By: High School Student Student , Fri, 06 Oct 2006 14:08:10 GMT

All gun problems are realted to the fact that there are too many guns in circulation, and that they are too easily accessable. The moron's solution: add more guns to the equation. If we want to stop violence, we should just have stricter un control laws. If we go about arming teachers, eventually a gun will be left lying around and there will be a fatal accident, so lets just get rid of the damn guns altogather.

    guns in schools
By: Jeff Craycraft , Fri, 06 Oct 2006 14:00:06 GMT

You have lost mind. Arming people in schools is like putting the fox in the hen house. The gun laws in this country are far too lax to let your average Joe Security guard in the school with a gun. You think I trust that security guards with a gun anymore then I do the crazy person down the street. More people in this country are killed with their own guns then any other way. We don't need to turn our schools in to armed fortresses. What message does that send to our kids? Be fearful, carry guns, be aggressive and violent and if you have to kill someone with gun if you feel threatened it is ok. Shoot first ask questions later. Your ideas are absurd. You can't have a peaceful environment unless you do peaceful things and carrying guns are not peaceful in any way. You guys are brain dead, and brainwashed by the redneck gun carrying NRA just to get votes. You would turn this country into the Wild West all over again. That’s what we need are more gun fights in our classrooms. Look at the Amish and learn something. There are crazy people in the world and putting more guns in society and around the world is a mistake. You people like to use your little comment that guns don't kill, people do and that is a complete cop out on logic. People do everything and that is the problem. We don’t create higher levels of consciousness by acting in this way. If there were no guns in this world, no one could be killed with a gun. We attempt to take out of society drugs and other things to keep people from making bad decisions but it is easier to get a gun then a marriage license. You need to seriously go back and look at your thinking and realize it is this thinking, just like it is our President's thinking that has killed thousands of people with his aggressive position on Iraq and nothing has been accomplished. There is no evidence that people and societies are safer and more peaceful with guns. The US is the most violent nation on earth and we have more guns then anyone.

I would hope that the people trying to make laws and decisions for the people of this country would be considerable more enlightened then you appear to be with this position you are taking on putting guns in schools. If this type thinking in this country condinues we will pretty soon be totally consumed by fear so badly that we can go outside our houses without wearing bullet proof vest and having armed guards escort us everywhere. That is where you are headed with this ideology and there is no evidence that you are safer. And even if there was evidence that you would have less a chance of being attacked, what kind of life is that anyway. Do you want your kids sitting in a classroom with soldiers at the door? God, I just can’t believe the ignorance of the people that are in our government.

Why not work to change consciousness so that people don’t think this way and so that people don’t have the fears that you do, so we can eventually get rid of this society where people do these crazy things. Like I said before go study the Amish people and learn something about living peacefully, without fear and without the concern of crazy people. Its too bad the crazies have attacked their society, but maybe if there is a blessing here, people like you and our President might wake up and see a better way. A way that is supported by the will of God and not by the will of fear.

I don't want my child in a school with armed guards. I want my child in a school where they can learn to be fearless, loving, caring and peaceful and in a world where we feel we have to carry weapons to be safe.

    What can we do?!
    By: saleng , Fri, 06 Oct 2006 13:16:15 GMT

1.In Wisconsin case, a student murdered a teacher. Where is the security? How he got the gun in first place?

We should put the security system in place in every middle/high school. Every student needs to go through the security check point to prevent them to carry any weapon to school.

2.In Colorado case, AN OLD MAN (might count middle age) with A GUN could do whatever he want in high school with all young strong kids around. Where is the awareness? I heard some kids saw him wondering around early day, why no one informs teachers/security? Those young strong kids could tangle him and beat him up easily before any bad happen. How he got the gun in first place?

We should start educating student about security awareness and self defense, just like fire drill, might have “terrorist drill”, “gunman drill”. Since teachers and students are seeing each other everyday, they need to work together as a team to prevent stranger has a chance to attack school.

3.In Amish school case, that’s really sad. No one will ever think that could happen in such a peaceful community. How he got the gun in first place?

We should start thinking to put the security in place in any kind of school, even home school. They should have a guard in place to protect those little kids. Hopefully, federal can impose this to the school systems.

    Thank you for listening.

"I am a public school teacher. I do not wish to have carry a gun. In the idea of the Social Contract which is the underlayment of democracy, I give up certain rights in order to be protected by the government. This is one of those times."

If this is is an example of the "quality individuals" and the cirriculum that exists in our public schools today, then that is one more reason to keep kids out of public schools.

Social Contract? Pray tell, when did you sign this contract? What were the terms? I have never signed any "Social Contract" in which I have agreed to give up any rights. Furthermore, if this so-called contract were to actually exist, it would be a simple matter to demonstrate that the government has failed to fulfill the terms of the contract. Government is demonstrably incapable of protecting people, therefore, any "social contract" would be null and void. The individual is the only person who can reasonably provide for their own safety.

    Arm the Teachers????
    By: MDR , Fri, 06 Oct 2006 11:27:05 GMT

This is the most absurd idea I have ever heard. People that make these proposals and support these proposals haven't a clue. Maybe people should look around the world - they will quickly see that countries without easy access to weapons don't have as many of these social problems.......... people like Frank are irresponsible leaders.

    Arm the Teachers
By: Samuel Fields , Thu, 05 Oct 2006 23:43:19 GMT

Although I doubt if most teachers would want i=to, arming the ones who are for it might be a good idea. I knew a couple of teachers who went armed. One taught for years in Ekalaka, Montana. Law enforcement will be against it, saying they will protect the schools. There is no record of law enforcement protecting schools or anyone else except themselves and politicians

Its a shame so many educators are idiots
By: Robert Thomas , Thu, 05 Oct 2006 22:40:39 GMT

I wish I could say that I find it hard to believe that educators, supposedly intelligent people, made the comments contained in this article. They, collectively, state what a bad idea allowing carrying of weapons would be but offer no other ideas except for nebulous statements such as "increasing safeguards" or "adding safety" How exactly do you do that? Short of posting a police officer to each school? How else do you provide an armed response to a lunatic in a school, armed with a gun or otherwise? No law, posted sign, stern words are going to deter someone who is already planning to commit murder. I suppose some other law will be enacted that either bans guns or creates an even bigger "weapon free zone" around schools, etc. It won't work, lunatics don't pay attention to laws. RT

    arming teachers
    By: s rusk , Thu, 05 Oct 2006 22:20:19 GMT

This is an extremely dangerous thought! However in world did you come up with this one? It might be important to note there are many dangerous teachers in classrooms without thoughts of them being allowed to carrying guns. Just very unstable individuals. Might want to run some numbers on that, sir! Have a feeling it will certainly change your mind.

    Teachers/guns

Great solution...I always thought we should have job opportunities for ex and retired SWAT team members, ex Marines...Get them a teaching certificate and we are good. What a stupid idea...What country has this ....Algeria? Frank Lasee needs to go back to the asylum, the lobotomy didn't take.

    Guns
By: Virgil Koester , Thu, 05 Oct 2006 20:54:56 GMT

I support Rep Lasee in his proposal for possibly some teachers or school representative to carry concealed weapons. It may be that no one carries a gun in the school, but the shooter won't know that. We did not have gun shootings till signs were posted "This is a gun free zone" If someone wants to kill people they go to this Area. It safe to shoot people there.
Have we ever had an incident where a person wanting to shoot someone go to the police station to do it?

This is just another scheme by cheap politicians. They want to put the onus on someone else when it is their pork barrel spending, which puts education sucking hind tit. Politicians are so busy stuffing their own pockets that there's no money left to protect school children.

It is the lawmaker's duty to protect the schools and to do it with trained personnel. Teachers already have a job; they don't need to moonlight as security guards. If the schools need guarding, hire guards, stupid.
