Curtains were finally lifted over the possible cause of death of model Anna Nicole Smith's son Daniel Smith's death after pathologists revealed that he might have died due to fatal interaction of anti-depressants Lexipro and Zoloft, and methadone, which is used as a painkiller to treat heroin addiction.
The cause of death was revealed to the media by pathologist Cyril Wecht soon after receiving the toxicology results from National Medical Services in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. He added that Anna Nicole Smith was not aware of her son using methadone or whether he was addicted to heroin. "This is one of the mysteries remaining in this case, why he was taking methadone. It could have been as a painkiller. It is a legitimate drug for that use. His family is shocked. I am told that Mrs. Smith was completely in the dark about Daniel taking it," he said.
Wecht was hired by Smith to find out the exact cause of her son's death and put an end to speculation that any foul play was involved. Says Wayne Munroe, a Bahamian attorney for Smith, "At least she knows the attacks on her son's reputation can be put to rest because it's clear he didn't intentionally take his life". Wecht added that since this report clears any indication of foul play, it was not necessary to go ahead with the proposed inquest but said that any decision regarding the matter would be taken by the magistrate in the Bahamas.
Meanwhile, Smith married her lawyer, Howard K. Stern, who last week revealed that he was the father of her daughter, on a boat near the Bahamas on Thursday. However he added that this was not legally binding, as they didn't have the necessary legal paperwork. Smith released a statement saying that, "Although the ceremony was officiated, it was not a wedding, and no marriage certificate was issued". Smith has been married twice, once to Daniel's father Bill Smith and to Texas oil billionaire J. Howard Marshall.
