New York, NY (PRWEB) November 20, 2009 -- 8tracks, an internet radio network, will publicly launch its application programming interface (API) for music playback at Music Hack Day in Boston on November 21 and 22. Developers can use the 8tracks API to add nearly 50,000 handcrafted playlists to a third-party application on a website or device. It's available at http://developer.8tracks.com.
8tracks provides a simple, legal way for people to create and share an online "mix"- a playlist of music that's at least 30 minutes (eight tracks) in length. Listeners can access these mixes, selecting a mix based on artist, genre or mood, and then tune in radio-style, with further mixes of interest queued up based on the content of the first.
Music Hack Day is a weekend of music hacking in which over 300 developers and artists conceptualize, create and present the next generation of music applications. "We are pleased to open our API to developers at Music Hack Day, and we look forward to working with our large and growing community to make 8tracks an even more valuable service for DJs, listeners and partners," noted David Porter, 8tracks' founder and CEO.
The 8tracks team has built two applications using the new API, including a player for the iPhone (which will be demonstrated at Music Hack Day) and a Flash player that allows DJs and listeners to embed a mix on their website, blog or Facebook profile.
8tracks is launching its API using a new service from Stratus Security Technologies. Stratus offers a hosted API management platform that helps companies monetize their data and content via APIs in a secure and reliable way. It also offers a developer portal that helps developers find and use APIs and publish the apps they create.
8tracks chose Stratus to better manage developer registration, support and security; to monitor and regulate usage; and to offer a paid version of its service for certain business partners.
8tracks and Stratus will be on hand to demonstrate the new API at Music Hack Day.
About 8tracks:
8tracks provides a simple, legal way for people to create and share an online mix. Mix creators ("DJs") upload MP3s to create an online playlist that's at least 30 minutes (8 tracks) in length. DJs can add cover art, a description and up to 3 tags to classify their mix -- and then share it on a dedicated "mixpage" on 8tracks as well through Twitter, Facebook or a blog.
Listeners tune into a DJ's mix in a radio-style manner and can favorite or buy the track, comment on and share a mix, and follow the DJ (as one would on Twitter). With a focus on handcrafted mixes created by people, 8tracks bl what have historically been the 2 most common ways that listeners discover new music -- radio and word-of-mouth promotion.
8tracks has been bootstrapped by a small team in NYC and SF, launched on August 8th of last year, and raised a small angel round this past summer. It was nominated for best music site in the 2009 Webbys and attracts more than 300k unique visitors per month. http://8tracks.com
