WASHINGTON - There was some much needed relief for air passengers in the US after the Department of Homeland Security announced that it will be easing the ban on carrying liquids and gels in carry-on bags into airline flights.

The ban was imposed by the US officials following the terror threat to bomb US bound flights, which was foiled by the British authorities last month. The terrorists were supposed have carried the explosives on board in guise of sports drinks bottles in the carry-on bags.

The Transportation Security Administration said that as of now they would be allowing passengers to carry travel-size toiletries with a maximum capacity of 3 ounces (90 ml) and in a small clear-plastic bag. Passengers can also carry drinks bottles and other items that have been purchased from the airport.

Assistant TSA Secretary Kip Hawley explained the details, "After the initial, total ban, we have learned enough from the U.K. investigation to say with confidence that small, travel size liquids are safe to bring through security checkpoints in limited numbers. We have also taken additional security measures throughout the airport that make us comfortable allowing passengers to bring beverages and other items purchased in the secure area onboard,” he said.

Homeland Security official added that lip gloss and hand lotions will not be confiscated by the airport authorities and will be placed in bags for passengers to carry aboard, provided they are cleared by the airport screeners.
