NEW YORK: Former U.S. president Bill Clinton steadfastly defended his efforts as president to capture al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and accused the Bush administration of doing very little in thwarting the 11 September 2001 attacks engineered by the terrorist outfit.
In a taped interview telecast on Fox News Sunday, the former president claimed he was closer to killing Laden than anybody else and said if he continued as president he would have "more than 20,000 troops there trying to kill him."
He chided the right-wingers for criticizing him for his efforts to capture Laden, saying, "But at least I tried. That's the difference in me and some, including all of the right-wingers who are attacking me now."
He was pointedly asked whether he had failed to anticipate the threat posed by the Qaeda leader. He responded, "They had eight months to try; they did not try. I tried. So I tried and failed." The 9.11 attacked occurred about eight months after president Bush took over from Clinton.
He said he had authorized the CIA to kill Laden and overthrow the Taliban in Afghanistan after the bombing of the U.S. destroyer Cole in 2000, but the action was never carried out because the U.S. could not establish a military base in Uzbekistan and because both the CIA and FBI refused to certify that Laden was behind the bombing.
A television movie earlier in September had portrayed Clinton as too much preoccupied with the Monica Lewinsky scandal that he failed to confront Laden and his militants. Clinton had dismissed the contention as indisputably wrong.
Asserting that he had done more to try to kill Laden than "all the right-wingers who are attacking me now," he said, conservatives at one time had criticized him for "obsessing" over Laden while he was in office.
Clinton also pointed out to the anomalous perception in the minds of the Bush administration as far as threats from Iraq and Afghanistan are concerned. He said the U.S. has 21,000 troops in Afghanistan, most of them in bases along the border, while it has 140,000 troops dealing with the increasing unrest in Iraq.
At one point in the interview, the former president accused host Christ Wallace of straying away from the main theme of discussion -- climate change -- and asking him why he did not do more to capture Laden and destroy al Qaeda.
"So you did Fox's bidding on this show. You did your nice little conservative hit job on me," he told Wallace. "I want to know how many people in the Bush administration you asked this question of?
"And you've got that little smirk on your face and you think you're so clever. But I had responsibility for trying to protect this country. I tried and I failed to get bin Laden. I regret it," he said.

A federal judge in D.C. ruled Clinton committed perjury. His own state's Bar suspended him from the practice of law. Clinton is a certified liar. Period.

It is amazing how someone has to be blamed when you don't agree with a situation. Clinton was a fool, more interested his own agenda than that of our country. Bush has made mistakes, but not without the help of the House and Senate. It appears that the politicians are more interested in playing the game than the country. Time to stop finger pointing and focusing on what is in "our" best interests. The heck with the rest of the world for a change.

The Al Qaeda Ruse

Reiterating some known circumstances:
1. President George H. W. Bush drove Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait and kept him bottled in his own country with U.N. inspectors chasing his WMD ghosts - real or not. All this without fomenting civil war in Iraq.
2. President William J. Clinton stopped Saddam Hussein's second attempted aggression against his neighbors, put him back in his cage, and kept him there with U.N. inspectors chasing his WMD ghosts - real or not. And made serious attempts to catch or kill bin Laden. All this without fomenting civil war in Iraq.
3. Hussein was a megalomaniac. He was paranoid and had no interest in inviting bin Laden or al Qaeda or anyone else to share power in Iraq - for any reason.
3. President George W. Bush disregarded all warnings and indications (including his father's), and reacted to the 9/11 disaster by kicking an already disabled dog (albeit a mad dog) who had nothing to do with 9/11. The constant comparison is: Responding to the attack on Pearl Harbor by attacking Mexico.
And as far as fomenting civil war in Iraq...
It would appear there is more to having power than the simple abuse of it.

I can't wait until election year. Bush is a disgrace to the United States Presidency. It was shocking he was re-elected. Now we have this tremendous debt and war. The Bush administration does not know how to negotiate in foreign affairs, and resolve issues. What were voters thinking?

Nice to see Clinton kicking back at the pompous 'Foxites' who think they know the truth, both don't have clue one what to do with it.
They've applied every middle-management and marketing skill they ever learned and have driven the world, and the USA, back fifty years - without the optimism of that time.

Clinton is a pathological liar,he belives what he says, even thought it's not the truth! People need to read (Because He Could ) By Dick Morris.
I believe he could if done a whole lot more about protection our country,if he had not if been so distracted with his own personal problems.

Its not the time to blame that who did or who did nothing? One thing is for sure; while Clinton was in White House he protected the Country and there was no attack on U.S. Soil either dam Laden was so afraid to attack directly while Clinton or he was protecting himself. Now he is still hidden but able to post threats and attacks …. Blame goes to current Administration ..!!!

once again the republiscums are stirring the pot. I am not a democrat! But I am sick and tired of the right winged jackasses trying to blame everyone else for all of the problems! When Clinton left office the republicans said they wanted a chance to "restore honor to the white house" well they have had their chance... and they have failed miserably! That being said, GET READY! What is worse than Georgie Bush? Hillary Clinton!

I remember thinking at the time that it was a political shot. Looks like you're doing something without offending anybody.

It is a shame that the right wingers are trying to put the blame of Clinton. In all fairness, Clinton did fire missiles to kill Laden. That was the closest anybody got to him. Bush has been an abject failure. Bush failed in protecting the country and he continues to fail in getting Laden. Furthermore, by getting into an unnecessary war in Iraq, Bush has made this world less safe. Bush is responsible for the presence of Al Queda in Iraq and his stupid execution of foreign policies have made Iraq a breeding ground of terrorists. While I agree with Bush in spreading democracies his methods are causing more problems than good (he was warned about this before the war but like a spoiled teenager he did not listen). Bush is part of the problem and he has to be replaced with a better administration.
