A diagnosis of early stage breast cancer was confirmed by Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts. The 46-year-old Roberts made an announcement on the program on Tuesday saying she did not want the viewers to hear it from anyone else.

"I have breast cancer, as my family here [at ABC] knows, and my family at home knows. And I'm very, very blessed and thankful that I found it early," she said.

Roberts, who joined Good Morning America as co-anchor since May 2005, is due for surgery this Friday after which she will follow the treatment regimen prescribed by her doctors.

Speaking to www.abcnews.com, Roberts said she discovered a lump in her breast during self-examination at just about the time she was due to write a tribute to Joel Siegel. The latter was a "Good Morning America" film critic who died from colon cancer in June.

"Much as I was hoping the doctor would say it was nothing, she did a biopsy and confirmed that the lump I'd found was indeed an early form of breast cancer," Roberts said, adding that because the cancer was discovered early, the prognosis was good.

The co-anchor also said she would continue to work on GMA and asked viewers to be kind to her if she had an off day.

In a message posted on the ABC website, Roberts also thanked the viewers. "Now I join the ranks of millions of Americans who are fighting this same battle each and every day," she wrote. "I appreciate YOUR courage and YOUR example. Thank you for showing me the way."

ATTITUDE
There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. Well," she said," I think I'll braid my hair today?" So she did and she had a wonderful day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. "H-M-M," she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle today?" So she did and she had a grand day. The next day she woke up and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. "Well," she said, "today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail," So she did and had a fun, fun day. The next day she woke up,looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her head. "YEA!" she exclaimed, "I don't have to fix my hair today!" Attitude is everything. Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. Live simply, Love generously,Care deeply, Speak kindly--- Leave the rest to God.
God Bless you Robin you will be in our prayers constantly.

Inflammitory breast cancer
By: Phala Harper , Mon, 06 Aug 2007 13:37:52 GMT

My sister just sent me information about a type of breast cancer that I NEVER heard about. It is deadly. Please research this and let women know about it. Most Dr.s tell their patients it is just a bug bite! I wish I could forward the video, but I don't know how. I love your show and I know you will follow up on this for the good of all women.

I am a huge fan of GMA,& live in the Louisville,KY area, where Diane is from. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41. I also was in shock! I have always been a healthy, energetic person, with no family history of any type of cancer. I had a mastectomy on Jan.26, 2006. I did not miss one day of GMA during my recovery! When I heard your announcement Wed. morning,I knew exactly how you felt. I am so thankful for early detection,& for caring Doctor's and Surgeons. Trust me when I tell you, all of the prayers for you have been heard and answered already. I heard the strength in your words, and saw the peace on your face. I had that peace also. You also have been blessed with a strong loving family, and friends that love you like family. That love will get you thru, and your life will be back to normal very soon. You will be in my prayers. Don't stay home too long, get back to work as soon as you can. It helps. Love, Tammy Cole

Dear Robin:
I watched GMA when you made your announcement. I had just had my Biopsy the day before, and just found out today it is cancer. I felt nothing, but my skilled Radiologist suspected something from my mamogram, and the ultrasound confirmed a "mass". I meet the surgeon Monday. God bless you, and help you through this difficult time. I loved your comment about being a "survivor" the minute you are diagnosed.
I cling to that thought while I wait for surgery, and what may come after.

Robin-
I thought you were an awesome basketball player -I played in college as well. But when I saw you on GMA for the first time I was hooked, I thought what an awesome personality, you fit right in; still capturing the crowd!!! I work for a breast cancer surgeon and it takes courage to travel down recovery road once diagnosed. Success is part of you, so I have faith you will be successful in beating breast cancer as well.

Breast Cancer Survivor
By: Vernetta Davis , Thu, 02 Aug 2007 12:01:15 GMT

I am a 1 year breast cancer survivor.I was diagnosed July 31,2006. I found my lump while watching Melissa Ethridge explain to Oprah how she found her lump and how it felt. As she explained, I did a self exam and there it was. The next day I called my dr and she had me go in for a diagnostic mammogram. When I had the mammogram, they asked me to have an ultrasound, so I knew there was something wrong because the last time they asked me to have an ultrasound after a mammogram, they found fibroids.
I went through 6 chemo treatments and 6 and a half weeks of radiation only to find that one of the chemo drugs Adriamiacin may have caused me to have Congestive Heart Failure. I've been taking several medications and am doing great now.
I met an email friend on the Susan G.Komen website that helped me to get through my treatments along with my family. My friend and I have never met in person, but we emailed each other almost everyday. She's been great. Her name is Kristin and she lives in SC. I live in MO.
My BEST WISHES to you and if you need an email friend to help you get through this, please feel free to email me at anytime.
Take care and God's Speed.

thousands of prayers are there for you
By: Lila Coudsy , Thu, 02 Aug 2007 06:10:09 GMT

Dear Robin,

I just wanted to tell you that I am praying for you and could not believe it when I saw the story first on the internet. I watch you every morning and I just love the way you report any type of news. You have such compassion for people and your compassion has reached so many people who are praying for you to have strength to do what you have to do to beat this.

You have a great attitude and as long as you continue to research and do everything you can, you will be ok. City of Hope in Duarte California has a lot of great treatments if you need another opinion. I know its on the other side of the country, but its really not that far.

May God bless you and again give you strenght and know that thousands of prayers are out there for you.

cancer surviver
By: Donna MacDonald , Thu, 02 Aug 2007 04:27:01 GMT

I had colon cancer in 1996. It was a rough go with the heavy doses of chemo. and the surgery. I never lost my hair on my head but didn't have a hair anyplace else. And still have very little to shave every several months.
Then 1 1/2 yrs ago they found that scary lump in my breast. I was lucky that it was small. I had a Dr. that gave me a choice to either take the breast or do the lumpectomy. Having very large breasts I said I would start with the lumpectomey. So after that I had some radeation treatments and am on Tomoxifin. They still see me every 3 months and have another mameogram then. My 3 Dr's I have had since 1996 really take good care of me. I am 67 yrs old and feel fortunate that medicine has come so far in my life time.
Good Luck Lady,
I know it is scarey as hell and you can get shakey and lumps in the throat just thinking about this. I am a widow alone and was scared s---l---. But you will be OK I am sure of.
God Bless You.

Every morning I wake up, grab my coffee and share my last 30 minutes of my morning routine with my Good Morning America Family--Then it is off to the races at work. My Mom and I sometimes even chat over the phone like you guys are somehow in the room! 23 years ago I was in a car wreck. The doctors still cannot believe I made it. I know why--2 reasons: There is great power in prayer! and God has something else for me to do here! Thank you for being brave --someone may take that step, go to the doctor and have something left to do here, too. I know God is not finished with you yet either! Much love, prayers and a speedy recovery! Stephanie

breast cancer
By: Paula Haby , Wed, 01 Aug 2007 20:12:31 GMT

Dear Robin, My prayers are with you & your family during this trying time. Thank you for recommending ultra-sounds/sonigrams. I would also recommend that the radiologist does a full clock-wise sonigram examination. To shorten my story: Months After my regular mammogram (no cancer was detected) my doctor referred me for a Ultra-sound due to soreness in one breast. They detected a cyst at one o'clock (sonigram breast exam terms)and stopped there. It was only later after following up with another doctor on her office sonigram that my extremely rare Cancer (sarcoma phyllodes) was detected at three o'clock on her office sonigram machine.

Also you here a lot of theorys regarding what causes breast cancer. Some of the nurses I conversed with suggested that maybe it is the Hormones in the beef we eat. They bulk up the cattle for market by injecting them with hormones & there is nothing that the FDA can do about it. Not to start a "panick in the streets" but maybe that is something GMA could investigate?

Robin, I love to watch you and Diane every morning while I get ready for work (the rest of the crew too) and was so saddened to hear your news. I belong to a knitting group at work and in October we have a fund raiser for breast cancer. One of the items I am making is a doll and I will name her Robin for you. She won't be as pretty as you, nor look like you, but she will stand for you and your courage. I will keep you in my prayers and have only good thoughts for you and your full recovery. May God watch over you, your family, and your dear friend, Diane through this trying time. Love, Alice

Dear Robin,

I was saddened and very concerned as I would be about a family member when I heard on Tuesday night's 6 p.m. news that you recently discovered you have breast cancer. You are a strong woman and I am sure you will overcome this disease and give it a fight as you do all things that you believe in!

I had a chance to meet you and the Good Morning America Crew in April of last year. You and Diane are both beautiful people and America loves you. All of America will be lifting you up in prayer as you go through this, YOU ARE NOT alone.

I know that God answer prayers and I believe that you do too, so here's to many, many, many more years of Robin Roberts and the Good Morning America Crew!

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Breast Cancer
By: Ralph G. Jaramillo , Wed, 01 Aug 2007 18:06:42 GMT

Robin, my wife Tina was diagnosed with breast cancer in October of 2006. She did a self-exam on her breasts and discovered a lump on her right breast. Through a mamo-gram, ultra-sound imaging, and PET Scan, the doctors discovered her cancer in the Third Stage. She also had it in her lymph nodes. This was a very scary situation for all of us, we have two grown children. But with the expertise of several doctors, she began her treatments right away, and now 11 months later after surgery, chemo, and radiation, she has just been given a clean bill of health! Through love, prayers, and a wonderful team of doctors, my wife is now cancer-free! You hang in there girl, you have the support of all cancer survivors, our prayers and our love....

Robin,
I was deeply saddened by your announcement on Tuesday. Your delivery of the news was stoic. My prayers are with you for recovery. I work in the field of Women's imaging doing mammography. Thank you for sharing your diagnosis with the public and stressing the importance of early detection as the key to survival. I work every day to educate women about the importance of self exam, clinical exam and annual mammography as the 3 most important steps to early detection. Discovery at any stage is a shock, but the outcome is very diffeent if it is not found early. My best to you.

Robin,
I pray that you'll continue to be strong (as I know you will). This is simply part of your life journey. I was diagnosed on December 23, 2005 and, like you, had no history of breast cancer. It's a shocker so remember--it's ok to cry--just let it out then get on with life! Your circle of family and friends will expand to include those who provide medical care to you. It'll be something of a spiritual journey that will lead to a better you!!!
By the way, Robin, I initially resisted chemo, but now I'm so glad to have had it!!!

Hello Robin

I watch your show all the time you are great. Sorry to hear that you have breast cancer. I am a breast cancer survivor. I found out while waking up suddently during the night doing a breast exam. I found a lump under my armpit. I was so afraid. My cancer was stage three. This was 2003. I'm fine. You will be in my prayers. Chemo was not so bad, but radiation was a piece of cake. The only problem was having to be their everyday for 5 1/2 weeks. God Bless you. Greatful you found it early

Hello, Robin,

Just heard the news of your diagnosis of breast cancer on GMA and was so sorry to hear it. Your making it all public will save many other lives.

In July 1992 I was diagnosed with an early stage breast cancer. After my treatment and the many follow ups that followed, I am still cancer free today and doing just fine and living a full life. I was diagnosed at 52 and am 67 this year.

Stay busy. Stay upbeat which I know you will. Keep a positive outlook and all will be well.

I just heard the news this morning when I was about to walk out the door to work. I couldn't believe it. I paused and said a prayer for you. I look forward to hearing good news about you in the months to come and continuing to see you on GMA. I know that you have a wonderful emotional & strong support system both on and off the show.

I was so sorry to hear you announce your news about your breast cancer. I think it was the end of March when my husband's niece was diagnosed with breast cancer. She's only 19. She is the youngest woman ever treated for breast cancer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Before her high school graduation she had a double mastectomy and had started chemo, so she needed to wear a wig for graduation, but she is the most upbeat, positive person I know. She has even named her wigs! She has a site on the CaringBridge, and the most common message we see is "Keep the Faith." I pass that message on to you, as it is your faith that will see you through the days ahead. So, KEEP THE FAITH, and know that thousands of prayers are being said for you by viewers of GMA. By: Paula V. Turner , Wed, 01 Aug 2007 16:15:24 GMT

Robin:
As I approach my six year of being a breast cancer survivor, fight like you have no help and kick the cancer in the ass. You are already a survivor by recognizing the diagnosis and going forth with surgery and treatment.

I was diagnosed with (DCIS) ductal carcinoma in-situ, which is known as calcifications. Mu annual mammagram found my cancer and,the biopsy confirmed the findings. You have my support, prayers and the strength to survive.

I have been watching Good Moring America for quite some time and have seen many co hosts come and go. I can remember when you did the morning news for them and you seemed to take on more and more until you became co host. I have admired you as I watched and you are and inspiration to all of us out there that want to climb to the top while remaining a real, kind and loving person. When I heard your announcement on Tuesday I cried. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your familt and may this all be a fading dream in the very near future. Sincerely Fran Whittaker, Beverly Hills, Florida

breast cancer
By: vernita , Wed, 01 Aug 2007 15:39:20 GMT

Robin, I too have battled the beast of breast cancer. Please use your influence to continue to remind women to GET that mammogram as early detection is so important. A mammogram can detect the cancer before a lump forms so women should not solely rely on self exams. You are such a lovely lady, and an excellent role model for young women..THANKS! You and your family are in my prayers. Robin, since my last cancer diagnosis in 2003 I have become a whole foods shopper as I try to eat healthier and avoid foods with nitrates. Their nitrate free bacon is good:>):>)One more thing, before my surgery as I lay on he table I prayed out loud, asking God to please bless the doctors and nurses. peace//vernita

A Note to Robin
By: Carol Fisher , Wed, 01 Aug 2007 14:53:41 GMT

Dear Robin,

I was shocked, saddened and very concerned when I heard on Tuesday night's 6 p.m. news that you recently discovered you have breast cancer. You are a strong woman and I am sure you will overcome this disease and give it a fight as you do!

I have been a fan of Good Morning America for years and am very fond of you and Diane.

I plan to light a candle of concern for you in Church on Sunday.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Love,
Carol Fisher

Your Surgery
By: Jean Gilbert , Wed, 01 Aug 2007 14:39:15 GMT

Five years ago, I had breast cancer. Had surgery, chemo, radiation and lost my hair. Am doing great. None of the treatments were as bad as I expected. Faith, Prayer, Family and Friends are the answer. You are on my prayer list and I am sure that the thousands of others who are praying for you will see you through this. Watch the show each morning. God Bless You. Love, Jean

Robin,
I am a breast cancer survivor. I found mine the exact same way you did; scary at first but I following proper procedures per doctors instructions with surgery and treatment here I am eleven years later doing great. May God be with you. (Of course Diane Sawyer also)
