DES MOINES, Iowa, July 28 A 20-year-old intern with the presidential nomination campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has been arrested at an Iowa airport on an outstanding warrant.
Secret Service agents and Des Moines police arrested Derrick Lamon Johnson Friday at the Des Moines airport, after they flagged an outstanding Illinois arrest warrant for aggravated battery during a criminal background check, The New York Times reported Saturday.
Johnson had been working for the campaign for about a month as an unpaid intern, said Tommy Vietor, Iowa press secretary for the Obama campaign.
Vietor said agents learned about the warrant during a background check after Johnson was scheduled to drive a car as part of a campaign motorcade.
Also charged with fleeing from justice, Johnson was booked into the Polk County Jail, the Times said.
