EDINBURGH, Scotland, July 26 A massive excavation project is under way in Edinburgh as the Scottish capital prepares city streets for a new tramway.
The work is to be done in 200-yard sections, The Scotsman reported. In some cases, temporary bridges will be erected to carry traffic over the diggings.
Since Edinburgh has a long and sometimes violent history, the workers will be looking for more than water mains and underground cables. In Leith, the port district and the area where the digging began earlier this month, unexploded ordinance from World War II could be under road surfaces.
Workers must also be on the lookout for possible archaeological sites.
Trams have not run in Edinburgh for more than half a century. The first line planned is to run from Newhaven on the Firth of Forth to the airport by way of the city's main drag, Princes Street.
