Stockholm - The number of commuter train passengers that used the Oresund Bridge that links Sweden and Denmark surged to a new high in June, reports said Wednesday. In June, 841,254 commuter train passengers were registered, the Skanska Dagbladet newspaper reported.
"It was a 29-per-cent increase compared to June last year," spokeswoman Ulrika Mebius of the regional train operator Skanetrafiken said.
In May, 793,030 commuter train passengers were registered.
Mebius said the increase was likely linked to an increase of commuters travelling from southern Sweden to the greater Copenhagen region.
An indication was that the four trains between 7 and 8 am from Malmo, Sweden, to Copenhagen had the largest amount of passengers in May.
The 7.8-kilometre long bridge that also has a road link was inaugurated in July 2000.
Danish rail operator DSB, meanwhile, reported that 580,327 vehicles used the bridge in June, up 14 per cent on the corresponding period 2006, Skanska Dagbladet said.
