WASHINGTON, July 23 More than 40 percent of U.S. residents who took part a UPI-Zogby International poll said they have a "very unfavorable" opinion of the United Nations.
A total of 7,562 people responded to a July 13-16 Zogby interactive poll, which included a series of questions on the United Nations. The world body didn't fare very well.
Some 41 percent of those asked said their opinion of the United Nations was "very unfavorable" and 16.2 percent said they had a "somewhat unfavorable" opinion of the group. Some 30.6 percent said their opinion was "somewhat favorable" and 8.5 percent said it was "very favorable."
While 74 percent of Republicans had a very unfavorable view of the United Nations, some 7.4 percent of Democrats said they felt that way. The plurality answer from Democrats was "somewhat favorable" at 56.1 percent.
The overall pool had a poor view of the effectiveness of the United Nations with 35.2 percent saying it was not effective at all, 24.6 percent giving the next-lowest answer and 27.1 percent giving a neutral answer. Some 1.6 percent said the United Nations was "highly effective."
A slight plurality of 37 percent somewhat agreed the United Nations had made progress in meeting its charter but 33.8 percent said they strongly disagreed.
There is a 1.1-percentage-point margin of error in the data.
