VENTURA, Calif., July 20 A Ventura, Calif., man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing and torturing a 42-pound African spurred tortoise.
Jose "Tony" Mosqueda was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and grand theft after he allegedly stole the tortoise, named Bob, from the backyard of its owners July 7, The Los Angeles Times reported Friday.
Authorities said the animal was mutilated by someone who apparently tried to cut its neck and severe its legs. Bob is reportedly recovering after receiving treatment at an animal rehabilitation center, the newspaper said.
"It's a good feeling," Sgt. Jack Richards said of Mosqueda's arrest. "It just really pulled at some heartstrings, and it's good to have someone in custody."
Richards told the Times police were led to Mosqueda by people who said they witnessed the animal's torture.
