Time Warner Bros Inc.’s “Ocean’s Twelve,” the heist saga with the star-driven sequel to the theft caper ‘Ocean’s Eleven’, bagged $ 40.8 m. It steals off the No.1 slot at the box office from Walt Disney Co.’s “National Treasure” which slipped to third place with $10m. Ocean Twelve is the fourth biggest opening for a December release after the ‘Lord of the Rings’.
‘National Treasure,’ starring Nicolas cage held the top slot for last three weeks. It has lifted its domestic total to $ 124.2 m. Meanwhile, Blade: Trinity, the third in Wesley Snipe’s vampire series retained the No.2 slot. It opened with $16.1 m.
Ocean’s Twelve has opened with few millions more than what its 2001 predecessor Ocean’s Eleven had grossed two years ago. The movie features a dream cast led by George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones and reunites director Steven Soderbergh. Ocean’s Eleven opened with $38.1m in 200 fewer theaters and went on to make $183 m.
Despite unfavorable reviews from press Ocean’s Twelve pulled in more cash in its first weekend, said Warner Bros. The review slammed the film as a ‘dispiriting vanity project’ because of its in-house jokes. A certain section of press called it a fun film and ‘unabashedly trivial. ’
After Ocean’s Twelve’s success, distributor Warner Bros. and producer Jerry Weintraub are already thinking over one more Ocean’s sequel, hinted Dan Fellman, the studio’s head of distribution.
