Budapest - Hungary on Wednesday saw temperatures exceed the previous national record of 38 degrees centigrade, recorded in 1904, the Hungarian Meteorological Service said. The temperature reached 38.3 degrees in certain regions as the country continued to swelter in a heat wave.

Authorities in Budapest have been handing out water to help keep residents cool, and on Tuesday dished out tens of thousands of litres.

Temperatures are expected to stay close to 40 degrees until at least Saturday.
