NEW YORK, July 16 Not only does Jimmy Sanz save money every time he uses his cooking oil to fuel his truck but the New York restaurateur gets a fried calamari air freshener.
The 33-year-old said that by manufacturing biodiesel from the cooking grease used at his four restaurants he is saving money on gas while acting environmentally conscious, in addition to keeping the aroma of tasty fried foods readily available, the New York Post said Monday.
"It's a great hobby. You feel rewarded after you make it and it is fun looking at people look at your car when it smells like french fries," Sanz said.
The biodiesel is created from the grease by removing all glycerin from the oil, allowing vehicles to run safely off the methyl ester that is left.
The Post reported that while the environmental implications of the process did interest Sanz, he admitted that the money he saves on fuel and grease pick-up costs is equally compelling for him.
