BOSTON, July 15 Boston's best known homeless man, Mr. Butch, has died in a scooter accident at 56.
Harold Madison Jr., known affectionately as Mr. Butch, died Thursday of injuries he sustained when the motor scooter he was driving hit a pole, friends and family told the Boston Globe.
Madison was frequently seen rhyming, playing air guitar or helping people across the street, the newspaper said.
Fans of Mr. Butch made him the subject of YouTube videos and his own Wikipedia entry, while admirers at Boston College invited him to give a lecture.
Madison spent 30 years panhandling on the streets of Boston. Friends tried to find him transitional housing, but he refused to give up alcohol and marijuana as city rules required.
Neighborhood friends said they were planning a Monday memorial service at a local tattoo parlor.
