Oldenburg, Germany - A suicide driver going the wrong way down a motorway in northern Germany crashed into another vehicle early Sunday, killing himself and four others, police said. Police said the motorist driving against the traffic died at the scene along with the four occupants of the car he rammed head-on near the town of Oldenburg, 150 kilometres south-west of Hamburg.
A police spokesman said the car drove eight kilometres down the A28 autobahn at high-speed before the fatal crash occurred shortly before 1 am (2300 GMT Saturday).
Police said the 41-year-old driver was a local man who apparently was intent on taking his own life. Notes found the wreckage of his car pointed to suicide, Germany's N-TV news channel said.
Other motorists alerted police to the driver immediately after he took the wrong approach to the motorway, but officers were unable to stop him before he hit the other car, apparently without braking.
"The two cars were pressed together like a squeezebox," a police spokesman said after the accident.
Rescue workers were unable to extricate the victims from the mangled wreckage and a tow truck was called in to remove the vehicles with the bodies still inside, the spokesman added.
