Who doesn't love a fairy tale? Audiences sure do. Remember how J K Rowling's rags to riches story became as popular as her Harry Potter series? Now, another such story will hit the boob tube tonight on Lifetime. The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not a Fairy Tale, a screen adaptation of the memoirs penned by American Idol's season three winner Fantasia Barrino, has all the elements we prefer leaving to a Hollywood drama – rape, a bad relationship, single motherhood, unemployment, and subsequently, fame and fortune. Adding the icing on the cake is the fact that she's an African American. Is there any way we can not root for this one? But the truth is, we don't really feel like rooting for this, even though the memoirs in their book version went on to become a bestseller.

Perhaps the biggest mistake that the makers of the film have made is to cast Fantasia as herself. Singers can't necessarily act, and making someone revisit painful details of their own lives is sadistic. Even if Fantasia stays unaffected, it's hard for the audiences to see the reality of a young girl's struggle against circumstances when the victim looms large on the screen herself.

Based on the book, the film opens with Fantasia's childhood and school days, with Jamia Simone Nash playing the young Fantasia. Playing her undependable and selfish gospel singer father Joe Barrino is Kadeem Hardison and slipping into the role of her hardworking mother Diane is Viola Davis. Fantasia's grandmother Addie, who proved to be the pillar of strength in her life, is played by Loretta Devine. Though Fantasia was brought up in North Carolina, her screen home was shot in New Orleans. Director Debbie Allen has an explanation.

“I quickly recognized when I went to scout locations that not only did New Orleans translate as Fantasia's home in North Carolina but also by going there, the industry could help get them out of the mud, pull them out of the water to dry land. They need as much of a jump as they can. We used a lot of local actors and crew. We uplifted a lot of people,” says Allen. Given the thought behind the film, this does make sense.

Unfortunately, the director's good intentions aren't matched by talent. The film's direction leaves a lot to be desired. The editing is bad and the narrative suffers as well. Nevertheless, it has its stellar moments, most being the ones shot during American Idol and Fantasia's heartfelt rendition of Summertime.

One secret that the film has revealed is that American Idol officials tried to discourage Fantasia into dropping out of the contest when stories of her unhappy childhood and single motherhood started doing the rounds of the internet. The contest's officials, unsurprisingly, have denied this.

The high school dropout refused to give in. “I sure ain't quitting. Nope, I'm tired of that. I'm not quitting this time. So let them talk,” Fantasia said. The rest, we all know, is history.
In November 2004, the singer released an album, Free Yourself, which debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 pop album chart, sending out a whopping 240,000 copies in the first week itself. The album went platinum in two months, having sold two million copies in the United States alone so far. In the process it shot up on a number of music charts and even broke a couple of records. Free Yourself and the Summertime won Fantasia four Grammy nominations.

The story is fascinating and inspiring. But the way it has been told is unfortunately not. All the same, it is a tribute to Fantasia's never-say-die spirit and deserves respect if only for that.

Fantasias's story
By: WC , Mon, 21 Aug 2006 22:47:46 GMT

I was so excited to hear about Fantasia telling here story, it must have been meant for me to watch, I love her first when I heard her on American Idol.
I'm from Raleigh,North Carolina, but now reside in Washington, watching her the entire time on American Idol and it brought back painful memories for me as well, not thinking I was smart enough to finish school and wanted to quit. I know how it is to have a dream and thinking I'll never see that dream come true.

I cried during the whole movie, I just felt here pain. I'm a 43 year old black man, Now everytime I thing about her, tears come to my eyes. You have to take the positive things from what she gave each and everyone who watched that nothing is impossible.
My mother always said that, it's good for people to talk about, it's when people have nothing to say about you, that's when you worry.
I wish her all the best and that she'll keep making the charts and making us proud. I Love you, WC

Debbie Allen -- You go Girl
By: Brenda , Mon, 21 Aug 2006 22:29:09 GMT

My last response, I forgot to send a "Shout Out" to Debbie Allen, Director of The Fantasia Barrino tv movie.

Great job! I thank God that she didn't let anyone stop her from letting Fantasia be herself and telling her own story.

I feel totally blessed by just watching this movie. It gave me hope that our young ones are not lost. They have something to say and they are going to say it -- no matter what. I am so pleased that parents are watching this with their own children. Let's keep this one at the top.

Thank God for Fantasia . . .

Great Opportunity
By: chrystal , Mon, 21 Aug 2006 18:22:44 GMT

I let my kids watch the movie and I thought it had some good lessons. I applaud Fantasia and Lifetime...don't be so quick to judge people... everybody was not born in a glass house. Like she said, her daughter was a blessing because she realized she wanted more for her and she is using the gift that God gave her.

Fantasia, Her Story
By: Brenda , Mon, 21 Aug 2006 04:59:29 GMT

I think it is amazing for someone that has been hurt in life and has the desire to stand up and tell her story is amazing. And yes, she is an American Idol.

In some of the critisim of this tv movie, did anybody see the part where she fell on her knees and asked God to help her, to not pass her by? That moment along was something someone needed to hear, at that very moment.

I applaud all she does. She is one incredible young lady and God has His eye on her. Perfect for Lifetime network -- they deal with women issues. Don't miss the message here -- so many still live in her pain. Can't read, can't write, unwed mother -- hurting. If she can make it through all of that, don't you think she has inspired someone else to do the same, get up and follow your dreams.

You go Fantasia -- use what you got!

Fantasia's Story
By: Taneka , Sun, 20 Aug 2006 10:52:37 GMT

I thoughtthe movie was excellent. Kadeem Hardison
played an excellent roll as her father. Ii felt as though someone else should have played the roll of Fantasia other than herself.

Fantasia's story
By: Tonya , Sun, 20 Aug 2006 03:32:23 GMT

I think the movie was good, but somebody else should have played Fantasia. The mother was portrayed
as soft and not a good mother. But that can happen when you don't know how to learn to stop the negative cycle, teenage pregnancy. Also when you
have young mothers. Also, the world will do anything to destroy a christian. If your grandmother is a preacher, she should not be cursing. Even though her grandmother did not play
herself, one should not allow the world to compromise what you believe in.
