BERLIN, July 9 Germany's interior minister is under fire for proposing the death penalty for some terrorists.

Wolfgang Schauble also wants a law similar to one in the United States that allows suspected terrorists to be detained for conspiracy, Deutsche Welle reported Monday.

Green party officials, who oppose many of Schauble's ideas, accused him of trying to lay the legal groundwork for a Guantanamo-style prison in Germany.

Schauble renewed his calls for preemptive laws after the recent attempted terrorist attacks in Britain. He is promoting legislation to allow suspects' computers to be monitored without their knowledge and for increased video surveillance in public places. Terrorist suspects also should be banned from using cell phones, he said.

"You must take risks to defend liberty, but you can't just sit back and do nothing, either," Schauble said Sunday.
