Oslo - A Norwegian-born hacker has claimed he has managed to activate Apple's iPhone without giving any "money or personal information" to the phone maker's US network partner AT&T, reports said Wednesday. Oslo daily Dagbladet picked up the statement posted by Jon Lech Johansen on his own website, likely fuelling Johansen's status as a hacker.
As a 15-year-old he cracked a code that limited the playback of DVDs, and last October he said he managed to crack the digital protection on Apple's iTunes for downloaded music played on Apple's iPod player.
Writing on his blog, So Sue Me, Johansen said that "there are people who want an iPhone to use it as an iPod and WiFi device without having to enter into a 2-year AT&T contract."
After activating the "brand new unactivated" iPhone it "does not have phone capability, but the iPod and WiFi work," he said.
The iPhone was released in the US late Friday.
