London - The discovery of a suspected car bomb in central London Friday demonstrates the "serious and continuous threat" Britain is facing from terrorism, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said. Brown said the public needed to be "alert" and "vigilance must be maintained over the next few days."
He said new Home Secretary Jacqui Smith would chair a meeting of the government's crisis committee, Cobra, and report to the cabinet later.
Scotland Yard officers earlier defused a suspected car bomb discovered in a parked Mercedes early Friday in Haymarket, central London.
