Rio de Janeiro - Brazilian striker Adriano, who plays for Inter Milan, was the victim of an extortion attempt allegedly by Rio de Janeiro police agents, the Brazilian Federal Police confirmed Wednesday. Adriano, currently on holiday in the United States, received a document in Federal Police stationery in June. The text asked him for explanations as to an alleged "association for drug trafficking ends."
The document carried a forged signature of the Federal Police Superintendent in Rio, Delci Teixeira, and asked Adriano to contact the Federal Police on a cell phone number.
The case was reported to the authorities on June 18 by the striker's agent, Gilmar Rinaldi, who said Adriano had already suffered an extortion at the beginning of the year, allegedly at the hands of the same police officers.
The Federal Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the extortion was carried out by two men who used a car similar to those used by police agents.
The authorities are currently trying to identify the criminals through an analysis of closed circuit security video footage at the building where the document was handed in.
