CLOUDCROFT, N.M., June 22 New Mexico police say a man who was caught with 67 marijuana plants in the trunk of his car told them he thought the plants were legal in the state.

The Otero County Narcotics Enforcement Unit said Charles Barnes told police he wanted to see how well the marijuana plants would grow in the area around Cloudcroft, N.M., the Almagordo (N.M.) Daily News reported Friday.

"Dude, I totally thought weed was legalized in New Mexico," police quoted Barnes as saying. The police confiscated the contraband and Barnes was issued a non-traffic citation for possession of marijuana.
