Tom Hanks will be playing the lead role in the film version of “The Da Vinci Code” a mystery novel. The thrilling novel written by Dan Brown had stayed at No.1 position on the New York Times best seller list for more than 14 weeks. The plot revolves around Harvard professor Robert Langdon (played by Hanks), who uncovers a 2000-year-old conspiracy through clues encoded in painting by Leonardo Da Vinci.

George Clooney, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman were all likely candidates before it was finalized to sign Tom Hanks for the role.It has been rumored that the Code produced by Matt Tolmach and Brian Grazer will also feature Kate Beckinsale.

Ron Howard will be directing the movie. Howard is currently busy on "The Cinderella Man," of Universal Pictures, starring Russell Crowe. It will be released in the coming summer.

Akiva Goldsman, who had earlier written screenplay for Howard's "A Beautiful Mind," will be writing the script for Code. Currently he is working on the screen adaptation of Brown's “Doubleday” novel.
