China surpasses United States in emissions

BILTHOVEN, Netherlands, June 19 China's 2006 carbon dioxide emissions were 8 percent higher than those of the United States, the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency announced Tuesday. For the first time China is the No. 1 carbon dioxide emitting country, largely due to cement clinker production. The NEAA produced its preliminary numbers from British Petroleum energy data and cement production data.According to the NEAA, cement clinker production is the cause of about 4 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions -- the largest carbon emitting industrial process. China represents 44 percent of global cement production.China's emissions of carbon dioxide increased 8.7 percent in 2006 alone and are expected to continue increasing due to drastic economic and industrial growth. The increase is also due to increased coal consumption in 2006, about 4.5 percent. While China was projected to surpass the United States in carbon dioxide emissions, in 2005 it was still 2 percent below U.S. levels. The European Union is the third-largest carbon dioxide emitter, but its levels are about half of China's. The next biggest emitters are Russia, India and Japan. With China's increasing emissions, global emissions continue to increase as well. In 2006 global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel use increased by about 2.6 percent -- slightly less than the growth in 2005.Copyright 2007 by UPI

You're how old Sef? Eleven?
America would love to believe in global warming being caused by humans, than we could prevent third world countries from developing themselves into economical and industrial empires. The truth is, the emissions of CO2 is natural and is helping plants grow. You know a lot about it? Read some more.

why do those people still pollute the earth? Have they ever thought about what their doing? They think as long as they have their money they will be o.k.Wrong, when we run out of natural resources like trees how will we get paper. And oil in 50 years we will be on the verge of no oil if we continue to use the oil like we do. ALL OF THOSES RICH STUCK UP PEOPLE WHO own factories and pollute can cut down on their pollution, for a cost. Like a owner of a coal factorie that burns coal for electricity. instead of burning coal he can get rid of the coal factorie and use the solar power way. At first you'll have to spend some money getting that set up but soon as they here that they say NO. Little do thyey know they'll end up making way more money in the long run and be helping out the earth. It's just that easy. The goverment is real mess up to and I Know a LOTTTT of stuff about them. But thats a diffrent story. theirs a whole lot more of stuff i got to say but maybe later. BYE.

Yes, you are correct that China has passed us but the carbon per person rate is the highest in the U.S. at 20 tons of CO2 per year, as opposed to 3 tons per year for the average Chinese person. Also, why does China have so much need for power, dirty or not? Because Western companies send their manufacturing needs there for cheap labor. Does China pollute? Yes they do but do not imply, as you do in this article, that the U.S. or UK or anybody else is making a marked difference in the global warming front to warrant this slant-of-a-story. Most of us Americans (and a large portion of Europeans) are either too ignorant, too lazy, too stupid, or too politically unmotivated to realize that each and every person can do something to decrease their personal footprint as well as put pressure on their government officials to act instead of yack.
