Budapest - Increased demand for electricity generated by the spread of air conditioning units in Hungary is in danger of outstripping the supply and causing a national power crisis, the daily Nepszabadsag said on Thursday. The heads of Hungary's electricity network convened a crisis committee on Wednesday after the reserve capacity dropped to below 600 MW. Hungary's electricity generation capacity is 8,000 MW.
The newspaper said that air conditioning units were boosting demand by 60 MW per year, and warned that a crisis could hit this summer, with people turning up the air conditioning in the face of blistering temperatures.
According to the newspaper, the heads of the Hungarian Electricity Works and the Hungarian Transmission System Operator believe new power plants are necessary to solve the crisis.
