CHICAGO, June 11 An Illinois high school history teacher who counts Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., among his former students, is retiring after 50 years of service.

The Chicago Sun-Times said Monday that Maine East High School teacher Paul Carlson has decided to retire from teaching in time to watch one of his most famous former students make a run for the U.S. presidency.

But politics are nothing new to the 71-year-old teacher, who previously lost his position at the school in 1962 for voicing his political opinions too frequently in class.

Aside from that momentary break in his employment at the school, Carlson served Maine East students for five decades, the newspaper said.

Despite his lengthy employment in Park Ridge, Ill., Carlson has remained steadfast in his belief that encouraging political correctness in schools is tantamount to an educational disservice.

"It's the most dangerous thing that has happened in public education," Carlson told the Sun-Times.
