United Food Group became the latest company to issue a beef recall in the United States over E.coli concerns. The company issued a voluntary beef recall on the ground beef that was processed at Vernon, Calif and sent to distributors over in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
United Food Group revealed Wednesday that this far 13 people were taken ill and four hospitalized due to E.coli infections. Three cases emerged in California, four in Arizona, while two were reported from Colorado. One case each was reported from Utah and Wyoming.
Michael Murphy, spokesman for Arizona Department of Health Services revealed that some si cases of possible E.coli infection were identified of which two were definitely linked to ground beef.
UFG said that it had expanded the beef recall to about 75,000 pounds of ground beef mainly due to "concerns raised by the California Department of Health Services."
"We have been working closely with the USDA and the California Department of Health Services to ensure that this additional recall is completed successfully," said a statement issued by Todd Waldman, senior vice president for United Food Group.
The suspected brands have a sell-by date of "Apr/29/07" or "Apr/30/07."
