Heiligendamm, Germany - The Group of Eight deplored Iran's failure to comply with UN Security Council resolutions and warned of further sanctions, in a statement released on Friday, the last day of the Heiligendamm summit. The G8 leaders said they were committed to resolving the proliferation concerns raised by Iran"s nuclear programme through diplomacy.
"We deplore the fact that Iran has so far failed to met its obligations under UN Security Council resolutions 1696, 1737 and 1747 and will support further measures, should Iran refuse to comply with its obligations," the G8 leaders said.
A "completely new chapter" could be opened with Iran if international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its programme could be established.
On North Korea's programme, the G8 said it continued to support the Six-Party Talks - involving the two Koreas, the United States, Russia, Japan and China.
The G8 leaders condemned North Korea's nuclear tests as a "clear threat to international peace and security" and urged North Korea to refrain from further tests or missile launches.
North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test in October last year, provoking worldwide condemnation. In July last year, a test of its long-range missile brought similar protests.
The G8 leaders said they were looking forward to "reinforcing our partnership with India," noting the commitments India has made.
The leaders encouraged India "to take further steps towards integration into the mainstream of strengthening the non-proliferation regime."
This would "facilitate a more forthcoming approach" from the G8 on nuclear cooperation to help India meet its energy requirements.
The G8 leaders said the threat of nuclear terrorism was a matter of "grave concern," and called for greater participation in a global initiative to combat nuclear terrorism launched in St Petersburg last year.
