TAIPEI: Gamers can now expect some truly 'high definition' visuals and response on their PCs thanks to graphics card maker NVIDIA. The company this week unveiled its latest offering - the GeForce 7950 GX2 at the Computex show being held here.
Claimed as the world's fastest graphics card, the GeForce 7950 GX2 is expected to make gaming visuals a treat for the eyes at a HD resolution of 2560 x 1600.
The new GPU is far superior to single-GPU graphics cards because of the combined power of two GeForce 7950 GPUs. In order to have 3D cards inside their PC, gamers were normally required to buy two graphics cards from ATI and plug each one into the PC's power supply. The GeForce 7950 requires only a single connection to the PC supply line and that too only a 400watt power supply.
This graphics card offers a much better gaming experience because of its 16 vertex shaders, 48 pixel pipes and 1GB of GDDR3 video memory. The combination of features makes it the highest–end GPU currently, the company said.
The NVIDIA display at the Computex show includes the company's nForce 500 series of MCPs for Intel platforms such as Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme CPUs.
Experts said the new graphics card with two GPUs, although possessing very attractive features, will present a challenge to the user. At the suggested price of $600 buying the card could prove unjustified considering the expected shift in gear from DirectX9 to DirectX10 by the yearend.
