Bogota- Colombia's deputy education minister was injured on his face and hands when a letter bomb exploded inside his office on Monday, according to a ministry spokesman. Gabriel Burgos was rushed to a police hospital in Bogota where doctors said his injuries did not impair his sight and were not life-threatening.

President Alvaro Uribe condemned the attack after visiting the deputy minister in the hospital.

Burgos opened a package that appeared to be a gift. His secretary was also slightly injured, said the education ministry spokesman.

Police have offered a 50,000 US dollar reward for information regarding those responsible for the attack.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bomb.

Burgos had been part of the team that negotiated the end of a recent teaching union strike following weeks of protests by students and teachers.
