NEW YORK, May 31 A bus driver of the Pentecostal faith said she may sue the New York Transit Association for firing her just because she refused to wear pants.

Tahita Jenkins, 33, explained to her bosses that the standard issue bus driver's uniform, which required the wearing of pants, was against her religion, The New York Post reported Thursday.

She even went as far as to bring in a note from her pastor at the Holy Ghost Headquarters Prayer Band Mission of New Beginning Deliverance Church in Far Rockaway, in the New York borough of Queens, requesting that she be allowed to wear a skirt at work.

But even that didn't work and officials in the transit department insisted that she must either wear pants or culottes or lose her job.

Transit officials fired Jenkins on Tuesday and she is now considering filing a lawsuit.

A similar suit involving Brinks Inc., the armored security service, resulted in a Pentecostal woman being awarded $30,000 and offered her job back, although she had to wear culottes as a compromise.

there should be another way

It's always pretty confusing and unnerving which voice and guidelines should be adhered.

I guess, the best solution is to form a unified work code that respects both a person's religion and the company's policy, though that is just wishful thinking.

Pentecostalist refuses to wear pants

I would be very very interested in reading the "note" provided her pastor and the scriptural reference used.

The actual scripture has more to do with "cross-dressing" in that a woman was not to wear what pertaineth to a man nor vice versa.

Please remember that during biblical days, most wore what we consider to be robes. Slacks/pants are of recent origin for males or females.

Must remember to look up the specific verse?

I would NOT apply for a position in the workforce that I KNEW had a dress requirement beyond my comfort level. Though I'm a bit old for Hooters, I still have a set of "girls" that would probably meet the standards.

And I would not apply for a position for which I might have "problems" later. When I went to work for the local post office in 1965 I knew I was going to work nights, weekends (all Sundays), and most holidays. It was definitely explained to me during the screening interviews. Before they had my lift the 80lb sack, a physical requirement.

When I didn't not want to work the customary postal clerk hours, I went to business school and learned shorthand so I could qualify for an office job and so for more than 30 years it was no nights, no weekends, no holidays and no overtime!

Having never seen a bus or truck driver (local or long-distance) in anything but pants/slacks, I wonder what she might have been thinking - though I suppose culottes was a good compromise?

Bias

If this woman were of a Muslim or Hindu persuasion, all kind of allowances would be made for her to keep her job. Since she is a Christian, no accomodation is permitted.

safety reasons for wearing pants? Driving a bus? Sorry don't buy that one, you can drive a bus in pants or skirts equally well.

Its against my morals to wear short shorts and tanks. So I never applied for a job at hooters. Why would you apply for a job that you know requires a dress code you can not comply too?

Why, oh why?

A lot of times, regulations like these are in place for safety measures. If that is the case, there really should be no reason logical reason for this woman to be allowed to wear a skirt because of her religion.

In other news, is this chick related to Leroy?
