Beijing - French climber Alain Robert evaded security guards to scale Shanghai's highest building dressed in a Spiderman costume on Thursday, before Chinese police arrested him. Robert, 44, took about one hour to scale the 88-storey Jinmao Tower, one of the world's tallest buildings at 421 metres, the local Shanghai Daily newspaper said.
The Frenchman took along a group of supporters and photographers to watch him climb, the newspaper quoted eyewitnesses as saying.
Robert unmasked for the descent into the arms of waiting police and firefighters, it said.
The self-styled "extreme climber of buildings", who claims to suffer from vertigo, began scaling buildings when he was 12 years old, according to his official website, www.alainrobert.com.
