Google Inc may be in the news more than any of its rivals including Yahoo and MSN, but when it comes to the actual numbers, it is Yahoo which is ahead in mail, news and finance portals, according to Hitwise.
As expected, Google dominates in the search segment with a share of 47.40 percent, followed by Yahoo Search with 16 percent and MSN Search with 11.50 percent. However this is where Google's domination seems to end. In the other listed categories, most notably, news, mail and finance, Yahoo is the leader.
Yahoo Mail has 42.4 percent share, while Hotmail is at 22.9 percent. Google's Gmail is placed fourth at 2.54 percent after MySpace.com at 19.5 percent. Yahoo News at 6.90 percent has proved to be more popular than Google News at 1.9 percent.
Yahoo Finance seems to have the measure in its segment with a 34. 90 percent share as compared to MSN Money with 13.40 percent and Google Finance at 0.29 percent. Mapquest dominates maps segment with 56.30 percent share, followed by Yahoo Maps at 20.50 percent and Google Maps at 7.5 percent. Surprisingly MSN Virtual Earth with 4.30 percent is ahead of Google Earth at 2 percent.
