Madrid - Troubled Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are not up for sale, according to club president Enrique Cerezo. There have been rumours all week in Spain that former politician Gabriel Camunas is about to make a bid for the club, at the head of a consortium including Vulcan Capital, owners of NBA team Portland Trail Blazers.
Cerezo is quoted in the digital version of Marca on Saturday as saying that "there has been no meeting (with Camunas) nor will there be. This club is not up for sale."
This is not the first time that Cerezo has refused to discuss the possible sale of the club. He and Miguel Angel Gil - son of former owner Jesus Gil - own around 70 per cent of the Atletico shares.
The long-term plan of Cerezo and Gil is to sell the club's downtown Estadio Calderon and instead stage matches at the suburban Peineta stadium, which will be part of Madrid's 2016 Olympic bid.
