SANDY SPRINGS, Ga., May 22 Two women in Sandy Springs, Ga., have been charged with animal cruelty after 60 cats were found stashed in two coffin-sized boxes behind their apartment.Angela Kendricks and her mother, Claudia Kendricks, were charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday. The women reportedly told investigators that the cats lived in the boxes because they were not allowed inside their Summit Place Drive apartment.Susan Feingold, director of the Fulton County animal shelter, said the boxes were covered with lattices to allow the cats to breathe."When we found them they had no food and water, but they were actually in pretty good condition," Feingold said. Feingold said the number of cats may be attributed to "hoarding." "People start with a few and allow them to multiply and it gets out of control," Feingold said. "They go from a few cats to 60, and they won't give them up. They feel this compulsion to hold on to them." Copyright 2007 by UPI
