LONDON: The Irish band U2's 1992 song "One" got the top billing in a poll carried out to find Britain's favorite pop lyric. The song, starting ""One life, with each other, sisters, brothers," topped the survey done recently by pop music channel VH1.
The song, which was part of the band's 1992 album Achtung Baby, scored over Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, the Beatles and David Bowie. The latest version of the song has been recorded by Mary J. Blige and U2. It has a No 3 ranking in the charts.
"How Soon Is Now?" by the Smiths with its downbeat "So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry, and you want to die" got the No 2 ranking. At the third position was Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit” — "I feel stupid and contagious, here we are now, entertain us". The fourth and fifth positions were won by Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and Coldplay's "Yellow" respectively.
The poll covered more than 13,000 people through VH1's website.
Among the top 10 of the list were Eminem's Lose Yourself and Robbie Williams' Angels. A surprise omission was the Arctic Monkeys, which has been topping the charts often.
Top music industry veterans like Noel Gallagher and Jon Bon Jovi chose some 100 songs from which the pollsters were asked to make their selection.
