LONDON: The Irish band U2's 1992 song "One" got the top billing in a poll carried out to find Britain's favorite pop lyric. The song, starting ""One life, with each other, sisters, brothers," topped the survey done recently by pop music channel VH1.

The song, which was part of the band's 1992 album Achtung Baby, scored over Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, the Beatles and David Bowie. The latest version of the song has been recorded by Mary J. Blige and U2. It has a No 3 ranking in the charts.

"How Soon Is Now?" by the Smiths with its downbeat "So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry, and you want to die" got the No 2 ranking. At the third position was Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit” — "I feel stupid and contagious, here we are now, entertain us". The fourth and fifth positions were won by Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and Coldplay's "Yellow" respectively.

The poll covered more than 13,000 people through VH1's website.

Among the top 10 of the list were Eminem's Lose Yourself and Robbie Williams' Angels. A surprise omission was the Arctic Monkeys, which has been topping the charts often.

Top music industry veterans like Noel Gallagher and Jon Bon Jovi chose some 100 songs from which the pollsters were asked to make their selection.

The Top 10:

1. U2 – One "One Life, With Each Other Sisters, Brothers"
2. The Smiths – How soon is Now "So You Go, And You Stand On Your Own, And You Leave On Your Own, And You Go Home, And You Cry, And You Want To Die"
3. Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit "I Feel Stupid And Contagious, Here We Are Now, Entertain Us"
4. Bob Marley – Redemption Song "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, None but ourselves can free our minds, Have no fear for atomi energy, Cause none of them can stop the time"
5. Coldplay – Yellow "Look At The Stars, Look How They Shine For You"
6. Eminem – Lose Yourself "Look, If You Had One Shot Or One Opportunity, To Seize Everything You Ever Wanted, One Moment, Would You Capture It Or Just Let It Slip?"
7. Robbie Williams – Angels "And Through It All She Offers Me Protection, A Lot Of Love And Affection, Whether I'm Right Or Wrong"
8. The Who – My Generation "Hope I Die Before I Get Old"
9. Radiohead – Creep "I'm A Creep, I'm A Weirdo, What The Hell Am I Doing Here? I Don't Belong Here"
10. Marvin Gaye – What's Going On "Father, Father, We Don't Need To Escalate, You See, War Is Not The Answer, For Only Love Can Conquer Hate"

I Melt With You
By: Walter Harold Marlin , Mon, 17 Apr 2006 20:21:22 GMT

Moving forward using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best
I saw the world thrashing all around your face
Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace

I’ll stop the world and melt with you
You’ve seen the difference and it’s getting better all the time
There’s nothing you and I won’t do
I’ll stop the world and melt with you

(you should know better)
Dream of better lives the kind which never hate
(you should see why)
Dropped in the state of imaginary grace
(you should know better)
I made a pilgrimage to save this humans race
(you should see why)
What I’m comprehending a race that long gone bye

(I’ll stop the world) I’ll stop the world and melt with you
(I’ll stop the world) you’ve seen the difference and it’s getting better all the time
(let’s stop the world) there’s nothing you and I won’t do
(let’s stop the world) I’ll stop the world and melt with you

The future’s open wide

(let’s stop the world) I’ll stop the world and melt with you
(let’s stop the world) I’ve seen some changes but it’s getting better all the time
(let’s stop the world) there’s nothing you and I won’t do
(let’s stop the world) I’ll stop the world and melt with you

The future’s open wide

Hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm

I’ll stop the world and melt with you (let’s stop the world)
You’ve seen the difference and it’s getting better all the time (let’s stop the world)
There’s nothing you and I won’t do (let’s stop the world)
I’ll stop the world and melt with you (let’s stop the world)
I’ll stop the world and melt with you (let’s stop the world)
I’ll stop the world and melt with you (let’s stop the world)

Bad choices

I can see little merit in those lines chosen compared to what should be there.

How can there be no Dylan/Springsteen/cash/Lou Reed in the top 10!

Most of the lines from Springsteen's 'Streets Of Philadelphia' surpasses those in the top 10.

two things. 1. radiohead is the greatest band ever and should have been higher on the list 2. the reason arctic monkeys arent on the list is, they are a newer band...these other bands are classic and have been around for a lot longer than a few months (not that arctic monkeys arent amazing)

I find U2 lyrics basic and boring.
It's the same old metaphors and it is a cliche.
Dylan is a true lyricist.
BONO is cheap plastic compared to him.

You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt
