INDIANAPOLIS, May 4 Traffic court in Indianapolis was shut down for the day when pepper spray used by the police department got loose in the building's ventilation system.

Three Marion County court employees became sick Thursday afternoon as a result of the release, The Indianapolis Star reported.

The court shares a building with the Indianapolis Police Department training unit. Officials are unsure if the gas was released when a box of CS gas -- pepper spray -- was opened or if it occurred during cleaning.

"Everything went fairly smooth considering the chaos that was there for a few minutes," said Court Commissioner Marc Rothenberg. "We had firemen running in with gas masks." Traffic court was expected to be back in session Friday.
