LONDON, May 4 Leave it to the British to figure out a way to shame homeowners into making their houses more energy efficient.Harigey Council in London has become the first authority in England to place thermal images of homes on the Internet as a means of encouraging frugality in energy use, The Times of London reports. The images were taken by a light plane fitted with military spy technology that records the heat escaping from houses. The plane was dispatched on a cold winter night when households were likely to be using a lot of heat.Footage of heat loss was converted into stills and then laid over a map of the area with each house being given a color-coded rating. The Times says officials hope families using a lot of energy will be shamed into improving their home's insulation.Copyright 2007 by UPI
