Being actor Tom Cruise's girlfriend is never easy. Besides being blamed for your beau jumping up and down couches professing his love for you, you have to maintain perfect silence while your to-be-born baby is tearing you apart trying to enter the world. At least, that's what scientologist Cruise is likely to make Katie Holmes do.
Holmes, who is due to deliver the couple's child any day now, might have to abide by the Church of Scientology's belief that screaming out your labor pains traumatizes the child. “Any words spoken are recorded in the reactive mind and can have an aberrative effect on the mother and the child,” claims the Church of Scientology. According to Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard, maintaining silence 'in the presence of birth' saves 'both the sanity of the mother and child' and 'safeguards the home to which they will go'.
To ensure that 26-year-old Holmes does not forget, massive boards with messages have been put up all over the Beverly Hills mansion she shares with 43-year-old Cruise. “Be silent and make all physical movements slow and understandable,” advises one of the messages.
If Holmes decides to stick to the scientology method of delivering a baby, she would also be required to not take any painkillers to ease labor pains. In addition, the medical staff might not be able to offer her any soothing words since the belief requires them to maintain silence as well. And as is obvious from Cruise's words of wisdom to actress Brooke Shields, Holmes will have to forget about relieving post-natal depression with any antidepressants.
Earlier, when asked why he wanted to subject Holmes to the inhuman method of child delivery, Cruise had said, “There have been misinterpretations that the woman can't make any noise, and that's just not true. It's nutty. No, but just calm and quiet. I want Katie to be as comfortable as possible.” We find that hard to believe.

Katie Hughes & Tom Cruise

This smacks to me of our organized religions attempts to discount, denigrate and destroy any other belief system but their own. Why don't they work on the ever-widening gap between the haves & have-nots, ending world hunger, bringing peace (without loss of personal freedoms) to this planet?
Let's leave Katie & Tom alone, so that they may revere this beautiful moment in their lives. Why can't we celebrate those who are happy, instead of attempting to ruin their joy?

I don't understand people bashing scientology. People of accepted religions saying that the story of scientology is absurd, is the pot calling the kettle black. Take Christianity for instance. You’re telling me a guy 2,000 years ago was walking on water, turning water into wine, and coming back to life. And if you lead a good life you will ascend up to heaven where some deity has been watching everything you do. In this day and age we have to understand religion was invented as a device of control. Religion as a whole is a joke but if it helps you get through your day then more power to you. Just try not to impose your regions believes on others.

I can only assume that Tom Cruise will stick by his guns and decline the offer of general anesthesia when he undergoes any surgical or otherwise uncomfortable medical procedure.

I have read a lot about scientology trying to get past the hype and see what it is really all about.
I have come to the inescapable conclusion that it is a money making scheme run by some very capable fraudsters who employ psycological manipulation and excellent publicity (ie: working with TV and music stars) to achieve their aims.
Many qualified academics have studied the precepts behind Scientology and have discovered that it is nothing more than bluster and publicity with a thin veneer of pseudo-science and pseudo-religion.
If that isn't enough for you just read one of L Ron Hubbards Sci Fi books and you will see just how much of a sick twisted individual he really was.

It's amusing that of the 5 comments posted to this article thus far, three of them (from "Jim E", "djk", and "mark cullen") are more likely than not to have been posted by strawman-wielding scientologists. Let us examine their claims.
"Jim E" claims that "Any Religion can be made to look odd or strange." This is true, and it certainly can. But most religions do not fly in the face of commonly accepted (and scientifically falsifiable) medical wisdom. Scientologists are notorious for flying the 'religious tolerance' flag when it suits them (c.f. the Scientology fron t website http://www.religiousfreedomwatch.com/), and trashing them when not (the infamous 'Pedo Jesus' bits from Fishman's OT VIII exhibit)
"djk" asks if we've had enough of trashing Tom and Katie yet. A nice, large, shiny strawman here, if ever I spied one; the article does no such thing. This is another common technique which Scientologists use to ridicule theiir 'opponents' (viz, anybody who is not a Scientologist)
"mark cullen" refers to drugs taken for PND as 'mind altering', and uses other CCHR-esque loaded terms. He also uses cheap shots such as "alleged author", and asks us if the author of the article herself is on drugs. Clearly a clam, and probably a nut. Possibly even actionable libel.
I cannot stress enough, children. DO NOT GET INVOLVED IN THIS WEIRD CULT.

Yeah, Scientology is a strange UFO cult invented by a disengenous science fiction writer looking to cash in.
But hey, it's no more or less nonesense than any of the other religions in the world. It's all fiction. Some tribe of people somewhere are probably worshipping a rock, what makes your rock any better than theirs?
By the way, Tom, how about you pass a kidney stone silently? No drugs. You might frighten the Thetans, and then Lord Xenu will have you!

I totally agree with djk. They both are smart people and will figure things out in all good time without having to tear them and their soon to be child apart. I'm just glad that all the people in my life are easy going with decisions I make in my life instead of tearing me down.

Tom Cruise is truly nuts! Why would Katie subject herself to this insanity?! It just doesn't make any sense. They both should be committed and have their child taken away. For the sake of humanity, DO NOT let this child be raised by a couple of wackos! Society does not need another Ted Bundy in the making.
Tom: you are truly one crazy SOB. Use the millions you've made off movies and seek professional help.
Peace.

First off, Tom is a world class idiot. Scientology is nothing more than a UFO cult with self serving bullshit added to make it feel good. That said, poor, poor little Katie is just as big of an idiot for whoring herself to this jackass and his moronic "religion". She made her bed. She will suffer in it. It's her own doing.
Katie- grow up and tell that douchebag to fuck off. Get yourself to competent medical care when your time comes. Think for yourself and for your baby!

Haven't you guys had enough of trashing Tom and Katie? Isn't there some other new couple out yet that you can tear apart? Why not leave them alone already. They seem perfectly happy together. The only ones not happy about it is the paparazzi and sleazy tabloids! Enough already.

Is this a re-run of an old anti-scientology article from a few years ago. Emma Price - alleged author of this piece states as gospel that Katie Holmes will be getting PN Depression and won't be allowed to take mind altering drugs. Is Emma Price on drugs I wonder, doesn't she know that there is now a black box warning on these drugs in many countries now. How about a little bit of news instead of bigotry.
