Athens - Unknown anarchists launched an attack in the early hours Monday on a police station in Athens, causing damage but no injuries, reports said. Anarchists riddled the outside of the police building in the northern Athens suburb of Nea Ionia with machine gun bullets and then hurled a hand grenade, which went off damaging vehicles parked nearby.

A police guard positioned outside the police station sustained no injuries, state television NET said.

Monday's incident was the latest in a string of attacks on police stations around Athens. Last week, a group of about 50 suspected anarchists threw firebombs at a police station in central Athens, causing damage to more than 12 vehicles and two buildings.

Masked assailants also caught police off-guard at yet another police station as they raided it with homemade Molotov cocktails.

Officials suspect the attacks were in support of last week's uprisings at various prisons across Greece.
