WASHINGTON, April 24 Nearly 60 percent of UPI-Zogby International poll participants said enforcement of current U.S. laws is the best way to fight illegal immigration. The 5,932 U.S. residents who took part in the Zogby interactive poll April 13-16 clearly consider the enforcement of existing immigration laws a better option over "creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants." Among the existing laws are measures that allow for the deportation of illegal immigrants and the prosecution of people who illegally employ workers.A total of 58.6 percent of poll participants chose the option to toughen enforcement of existing laws while 31.6 percent choose the "path to citizenship" option. Some 79.7 percent of Republicans asked want more enforcement while 54 percent of Democrats said there should be a "path to citizenship' created. The only race subset that chose the citizenship plan over tightened enforcement was the Hispanic category, which was about 10 percent of the overall sample. In that group, 49 percent wanted to see a "path to citizenship" and 40.4 percent sought tougher enforcement. The data carry a 1.3-percentage-point margin of error.Copyright 2007 by UPI
