Nintendo Wii continued its relentless march in the next-gen console race, once again taking the top spot for the month of March, selling 259,000 units, even as overall sales of video games, devices and accessories rose by 33 percent, according to new figures released by market research firm NPD.
Wii outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360, which managed to sell 199,000 units, while Sony's PlayStation 3 was once again relegated to the third spot with sales at 130,000 units. However Wii saw a 22 percent dip in its sales while Xbox 360 registered a 12 percent drop. PS3 was the only console to have registered an increase in sales, with month-by-month sales increasing by 2 percent.
There was more good news for Nintendo as its hand-held console, Nintendo DS sold a whooping 508,000 units, beating its competitor, Sony's PSP which managed to sell just 180,000 units.
Sony had something to cheer about with its last-generation console, PlayStation 2 topped the console race with sales of over 280,000 units. The hike in sales coincided with the release of hugely awaited "God of War II" game, which has quickly climbed the charts to become the top selling game for the month of March. The game has so far sold over 833,000 units.
