IRVINE, Calif., April 17 DHA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid found in fish, eggs, organ meats, fortified foods and food supplements, may slow the onset of Alzheimer's disease.University of California at Irvine scientists discovered DHA reduced levels in mice of the protein beta amyloid, which can clump in the brain and form plaques, according to the study published in The Journal of Neuroscience."We are greatly excited by these results, which show us that simple changes in diet can positively alter the way the brain works and lead to protection from Alzheimer's disease pathology," study co-author Frank LaFerla said in a statement. "Combined with mental stimulation, exercise, other dietary intakes and avoiding stress and smoking, we believe that people can significantly improve their odds against Alzheimer's disease," said lead author Kim Green.
