NEW YORK, April 16 "The Road," Cormac McCarthy ' s post-apocalyptic wandering of violence and longing, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, the New York committee announced Monday. Lawrence Wright's "The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11," an analysis of Islamic fundamentalism, earned the Pulitzer for general non-fiction, the Pulitzer Prizes Web site said. "Rabbit Hole," the tale of an ordinary couple whose suburban existence is shattered by a terrible accident, earned David Lindsay-Abaire the prize for drama. "The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle, and the Awakening of a Nation" by Gene Roberts and Hank Klibanoff, a book about the reporting of the civil rights movement, earned the Pulitzer for history. "The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher" by Debby Applegate took biography honors. "Native Guard" by Natasha Trethewey won in poetry. In music, "Sound Grammar" by jazzman Ornette Coleman was selected. The committee awarded a special citation to Ray Bradbury for his "distinguished, prolific and deeply influential career as an unmatched author of science fiction and fantasy." A posthumous special citation was awarded jazz composer John Coltrane, recognizing his improvisational techniques and his place in the history of jazz.
