LOS ANGELES, April 7 The entertainment industry is opposing a bill in California that would curb the use of false statements by companies pursuing music and movie pirates.
The measure in the state senate strengthens privacy laws by banning companies from using misleading techniques to obtain personal information on suspected bootleggers.
The Recording Industry Association of America and Motion Picture Association of America contend their lawyers and private investigators need such freedom to gain the trust of piracy rings, The Los Angeles Times said Saturday.
The practice, known as "pretexting," often involves investigators posing as criminals. Critics say the proposed curbs are needed to prevent companies from accessing personal information about customers, employees and critics.
