Hong Kong- A female hiker has died after falling 50 metres from a Hong Kong cliff, police said Monday. The 48-year-old woman was hiking with a friend and teenage son along a rough path over Lion Rock Hill, one of Hong Kong's most famous natural sights, on Sunday.
Police said the three got into trouble when they lost their way and climbed up a rugged cliff to find a way down.
The woman slipped and fell 50 metres sustaining serious injuries. She was airlifted to hospital by helicopter where she was declared dead.
The woman is the second hiker to die in the last two months on Lion Rock which lies in the New Territories of Hong Kong.
A 52-year-old man suffered a heart attack and died in February on the section of the trail known as the lion's tail.
Contrary to many people's assumptions, Hong Kong is not all high-rise developments and urban areas with more than 70 per cent of its 1,078 sq km is countryside, much of which is densely foliated and mountainous.
Lion Rock is one of Hong Kong's most famous walking destinations among the city's 6.9 million population, many of whom flock to the countryside at weekends to escape their small high-rise apartments.
A popular television series about Hong Kong people called "Under the Lion Rock" ran for 20 years up until 1994, followed by a new series in 2005.
