Mexico City- The northern Mexican city of Monterrey suffered a wave of violence that claimed the lives of eight people in a single day, a police report said Friday. The execution-style killings began Thursday afternoon, around 2200 GMT, with the death of a young man who was travelling by car, police said.
A group of armed attackers in several vehicles later killed a police officer, his son and an employee of a car dealership where the policeman was apparently a customer.
At around 0400 GMT Friday another attack occurred at a house. Three people died immediately and another one died as she was being taken to hospital. Two other people were seriously injured.
The attorney general's office said heavy weapons, similar to those usually handled by drug gangs, were used in all three attacks.
Unofficial reports noted the killings bring to over 40 the number of people murdered in Monterrey since the beginning of the year.
Monterrey is one of the areas where the central government in January deployed a joint federal police-military force to combat organized crime, and drug-related violence in particular.
